The Cardboard Box Tales

The Cardboard Box Tales

         2018

The Cardboard Box Tales is a site specific series of cardboard structures that welcome the interaction of all ages. This work seeks inclusion by both adults in a child’s world and children in the creation of art. The stories, facilitated with play structures traditionally built by children, welcome all ages to interact physically and vocally with each other and with children’s narratives. This project may be created and recreated endlessly, with new forms and structures dependent on space and what second and first hand cardboard is available. There is one structure per story, and one window per child creating that story.

The stories of children are transcribed by the artist and projected onto cut out bedsheets for individuals to read. A barrier exists in each structure that separates the participants from being able to see or touch one another, leaving sound the only indication of another presence once an individual enters. As the projections appear in sequence on the sheet windows, those inside must speak their part in turn, together voicing a narrative.
